Holiday Break Storage Tips For College Students

Holidays are a very exuberant time for college students, but it can also be a very devastating time. Whether you are in a college dorm room or an apartment, everything has to be packed up and moved out for the winter holiday break. For most college students, they would like to just have someone come in and toss everything in a storage unit. There is a little more to it than that. Careful consideration has to be given for disrupting an entire room of your valuable belongings. Even if you are planning on returning after the break, most colleges require that all rooms be emptied for the month of break.

There are some easy ways to get this task completed without exhausting all of your efforts. Some simple tips to use as a guide can be very helpful. Before starting the packing and moving, take a look at the following guidelines.
The first thing to do is to decide on what things you will need while at home, and the things that can be placed in a storage unit. Your furniture and bedding are some of the things that you will not need to take home. Other large decorative items may not need to go home either. If you are getting help with the storage items, tag everything to make it easier for those that are helping you.

After making sure that you have the right size storage unit, start packing your books. These are expensive items, so you want them packed correctly. They should be packed horizontally because packing the vertically could damage the spine or some of the pages.

If you are planning to leave clothing like summer wear, it is a good idea to wash them first before packing. Pack clothing in boxes, not plastic bags for the storage unit.

Label everything that you put inboxes or containers with the content of the package. This will allow you to unpack the boxes knowing where the contents go without looking through all of them to find a particular item.

Your dishes may not need to travel home with you because mom has plenty. Pack things like glasses and dishes in bubble wrap or other protective packing material.
Now you are ready to load up the car with the things that you really need to take home for the holidays. Your parents will appreciate the fact that they will not have to find room for all of your college furniture and accessories. You will enjoy your holiday more knowing that you will not have to load all these things up to bring back to college. Make your travel lighter and more enjoyable this holiday break.
